Dr. A.’s Patient
The patient presented as a 35-year-old male. His chief complaints were a significant loss of hearing and inability to eat on his front teeth. Clinical examination revealed a severe anterior tongue thrust. Both T.M.J.s were diagnosed as Self Reducing Type II with anterior disk displacement only.
The treatment plan was to develop the maxilla with an ALF appliance in conjunction with Delta Force fixed appliances, and to correct the anterior tongue thrust. This was to be followed with anterior vertical elastic traction to auto rotate the mandibular condyles recovering the anteriorly displaced disks.
The treatment time was 18 months followed by a 12 month retention period. The patient reported recovering approximately 60% of his lost hearing.
